I've read the following from various sources:
1. 88.2 sounds better
2. 96 sounds better
3. 44.1 sounds better
My initial brief non critical listening did not show a clear preference for either one. I'll listen more carefully over the next few days.
I noticed two things I don't really like about the SRC2496, the back of the case between the input and output connectors gets REALLY hot. I suspect the voltage regulators are mounted here on the inside. I put a computer chipset heatsink I had laying around over this spot with a piece of thermal tape and the heatsink temp is now a lot lower than the case temp was so I think it's helping. The other thing is the transformer causes a 60 Hz vibration you can feel on the top of the case. I may be able to fix this by taking the transformer off and using some rubber grommets, etc. It is not too bad, and inaudible from more than a few inches away.
I was fairly pleased with the DEQ2496 before I added the SRC2496, so if it does not result in some improvements I may not keep it in the system. I got within 3-4 db of saturating the input A/D on the DEQ by just having it in the preamp tape loop (for phono and SACD), so the additional db or two the SRC will give me may not matter much. The only consideration now is whether the upsampling and jitter reduction will be an improvement over running the optical cable straight in to the DEQ from the CD transport. As I stated in an earlier post, I assume the correct setting for this jitter reduction is to use the internal clock on the SRC2496.
