Well, yes, that was my first idea in setting it to -5, to drop the output level to a comfortable range for my preamp. I do have the MAX switch in the back set to the 12 db position (rather than 22) but with the gain at 0db I am using the lower end of the preamp volume. Setting it to -5 I can turn the preamp gain up to where I normally had it before - around the middle or two thirds position. If I am listening to a particularly quiet recording like choral music I will turn the gain up to -3 or -2 or even 0.Also, since the EQ is adding a mzximum of 4.5db in my case, setting the Gain to -5 means the output will never go above 0db and thus the DEQ2496 will not have to limit it.
I doubt if you are doing any harm to your equipment running at a gain of 0, I would think you would hear distorted sound before you reached a level that was harmful. If it sounds good you are probably fine.
