The largest boost I have in the EQ is +4.5db. So setting the gain in the utilities menu to -5 means for the maximum 0db input level at that frequency, the output will be -0.5db after the EQ, just below clipping. The DEQ2496 will not actually clip - it limits the output to 0db and this is a non-defeatable limit.
I find the gain at -5db is just fine - no loss of dynamics that I can detect. For a quiet recording such as choral music I may increase the gain to -3db just to keep from having to turn the preamp up so high. I'm still experimenting.
Today I added a SRC2496 ahead of the DEQ2496, with an optical connection between the two and optical from the SRC2496 to the CD transport. I will have to do further listening to see if upsampling to 96kHz or 88.2kHz is better. I assume that using the SRC2496 internal clock is best.
