I bought two Pioneer CD recorders used. One lasted about a year, the other was DOA. I decided a new recorder was best. I bought a Marantz CDR-632 for about $550 in June of 2006, and I am very pleased. Great functionality, good sound quality (I only use it to record analog sources), and it uses any CD-R/RW media, including "data" CD-Rs. It is OEM'd from same source as the entry-level TASCAM. You can get these machines used on ebay or Audiogon. For new recorders, I would shop the musician sites (Musician's Friend, Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc.).
