I've got one of these and figured it out pretty much as you describe. After fussing and fussing Im thinking I would just use it as an adjunct equalizer (tone control) on a second digital out, mostly for late-night, low volume listening, where I long for a 'loudness control' which of course my tube preamp doesn't have. But then I was in radio shack last week and saw what must be their umteenth version of an analogue equalizer for $70 (or so). I didn't buy it--yet--but its ease of use compared to the deq for the purpose I need it for really appeals to me. I suppose if I DO buy it I can't mention it here as this would have me expelled from the club.
