Is the HDCD flag in the TOC or in the music tracks?

If the HDCD flag is in the Table of Contents of the CD, I don't understand how it could be preserved in the conversion to Apple Lossless.

However, if the HDCD flag is embedded in each music track, then it makes sense that it would be preserved.
