WHAT...? Getting HDCD from Apple Lossless?

Is this for real? I have ripped several Reference Recording HDCD-encoded discs to Apple Lossless using iTunes with error correction. When I play back using iTunes, the HDCD light comes on on my Assemblage. Am I really getting HDCD decoding?

I've listened extensively to both CD and Apple Lossless, but haven't done on-purpose A-B testing. However if there is any difference in sound between Apple Lossless from my PC and CD from my player, it's too small for me to notice or care about.
