The MHZS is still performing quite nicely, and still sounds better on the majority of RBCD's than my RAM Denon 3910 - however... the gap in performance has narrowed considerably in the process of changing IC cables around. Currently, both are using Audioquest Sky 72V DBS silver IC's and Cardas Golden Reference from preamp to amps, and Neutral Reference for speaker cables.
The switch to Audioquest Skys has improved the sound of both players, but it generated more improvement to my RAM Denon 3910 which was previously outfitted with Cardas Golden Reference and my own DIY silvers. This has helped midrange smoothness and presence with the Denon's RBCD playback while providing more extension on both ends as well.
So the MHZS still edges it in RBCD with the 192X upsampling in use - very slightly fleshier sounding midrange, but not nearly to the same degree as in my initial review.
So in general it can be said that the MHZS performs extremely well, and on a budget you can score big with a $700 investment. Whether or not it continues to beat a very expensive RAM Denon 3910 is becoming a less cut-and dry question based IC's and power cables can alter the results. All this, and I haven't really spent any time tube rolling with the MHZS. I will say that I'm confident the MHZS would perform RBCD better than a stock 2910/3910.
My good SACD recordings are still clearly the best sound that comes out of my system. I wish the format offered more in my preferred musical genres. If you have a fair number of SACD's and your budget can support it, I'd probably recommend going the mod route (RAM does the same mods on the 2910). If you are 90% or better RBCD and/or on a budget, try the MHZS 66E/88E. You may also want to consider the Doge player, or the Raysonic 128.
I do not have manufacturers links for MHZS - it's distributed by Pacific Valve who carries several good Chinese made models.
