you need at least 4 inches over top edge of unit. BUT the mechanism is a cheapo three point system where center on cd is held by three feels like metal balls. much the same as on cheapo batter operated walkman type cd players. I did not like it at all, and consider it could in the long run damage the inner hole of the cds. Also the apollo takes way too long to initialize the cd. Try the primare first. Also If I could home audition units just for the price of shipping I'd be very happy.
