Rega Saturn or Primare CD31 Questions

I'm looking for a smooth, rhythmic yet totally non-fatiguing sound. Any comments or comparisons on either? There's a lot of info on the Saturn but not much on the Primare (which appears to be a real sleeper, Stereophile review notwithstanding).
I don't have any local dealers so I'll probably have one of these two sent for demo. Obviously I prefer to make the right choice up front since I'll have to pay the shipping charges.
Related questions:
1) How much clearance do I need with the Saturn to get a disc loaded? It'll have to go on a lower shelf (a tubed integrated takes up the top shelf for cooling purposes)
2) Will the Primare sound OK outside of a Primare system or is it compromised by not being able to run in true balanced mode? My amp is single-ended only.
