While ten years may not be very long in terms of speaker technology, it is a very long time for digital, especially for mainstream digital.
Think how much computers have changed in that length of time, and remember, the core of your CDP is a computer.
You sound like someone who will keep whatever you buy for long time. That being said, build quality is a big issue. Not too long ago I retired a Teac VRDS-20 I had been using as a CDP-transport. It is doing duty now in Jennifer Crock's re-recording outfit. I suspect that drive will easily run another ten years ... beautifully made.
Currently I have the Marantz SA-7 in place next to the Meitner single box SACD player. I think Ed makes the best converters in the world, but the Marantz makes the EMM Labs box seem like it was made in Botswana by people new to the electronic age; clunky, noisy, ill mannered, and the Marantz is all silk and instantaneous response ... you just know it is made to last.
You might think a reviewer would push for the best sonic performance, with no holds barred, but for myself ... living with a piece is a huge part of the equasion. The remote, the display ... is it picky about discs ... is it noisy? How long does it take to load (The Marantz SA takes FIVE SECONDs from drawer close to play; the Meitner ... who knows? Depends on the disc) ... how does it respond to the remote (I had a dCS that took FOREVER to respond, so you never knew where you were in the command sequence ... the Marantz ... virtually instantaneously ...
Not that I am recommending the Marantz, I don't know the models you are looking at ... I am simply making a point. If you listen primarily to digital and you listen a lot, that sucker will be in your face with any misbehavior or weirdness ... EVERY DAY!
Pay attention to the human/machine interface and remember you are in this for the long haul.
