It's hard to give you recommend not having heard your Marantz. But I'm inclined to think that cd players have improve in 10 years in read ability and should sound significantly better. Thinking about this some more. My first multi-player cd which I bought around 2000, was crap. I went to a universal dvd player, cause it had to made to a higher standard just to play dvd movies. As for car cd players it was somewhere around '97,'98 when they really improved on the read pickup and you could drive over railway tracks without the player skipping. So it's possible your Marantz has a good build quality, but I think it's a safe bet that cd players have improved to match dvd players standards which would have been around 2000+ .
As for how good you should go? Well I have a mid-priced universal player and a $1700 list price universal player and I think the difference is marginal. The more expensive player sounds significantly better with sacd, and dvd's but only marginally more detail with cd's as it upscales to I believe 24 bit. It also has a warmer sound, but I actually prefer the brighter sound on cd's with my mid-priced player.
It also depends on whether your system is revealing enough to hear the marginal improvements of a hi-end player. Like on my starter system I could not tell the difference between 192 WMA and a cd, now I can.
If that little bit extra is important to you than go for it. IMO though for an audio enthusiast a mid-price player is sufficient.
