I don't use an IPod but want to speak to the "need" for a preamp. These days most CDP's and other sources don't need an extra gain stage before the amplifier. In short I'm tooting the horn of passive linestages for any type of setup (PC/hard drive/IPod based or CDP based) Of course there are guidelines that need to be followed and not all sources or amps are best suited for passive. Anyone who has components that are even close to appropriate* need to try passive.

*- higher output low impedence sources, high input impedence,low sensitivity amps
