YOu need to head over to the AA PC Audio Forum. I am not sure why people miss that, but it has a ton of answers to your questions. There is even a heated debate on wav vs lossless compression.

I will say that I totally agree about ditching the pre amp. I run my Lynx sound card (the DACs are quite good) directly into my amp and it is so clean compared to going through a pre. Kind of the analog version of what you are diong digitally. Of course I am using the PC as an active digital crossover, not just a transport.

The choice of player makes a big deal and you have to have a player that will support ASIO or Kernal Streaming. Foobar does this nicely and is free. Itunes and WMP do not support ASIO. YOur card if it is designed for pro work, probably does support ASIO, and you should be fine. ASIO playback definately opened up the sound stage on my system.
