My decision was more emotional than factual. I did consider the 88E, but since this would be my first tubed CD player, I wasn't sure if I'd like tubes in my digital source at all. I was afraid 4 tubes might be too much of a good thing, and was more comfortable with just 2 tubes in the output stage only. This combined with the endorsement from my online audiophile friend that the CD 66E played RBCD better than his Underwood Denon 3910. I have been very curious about the 88E, since it is looks to be the same design with more tubes, and potentially even more natural sounding. The website claims warmer with deeper bass. I don't find this player lacking bass at all, but it is neutral, detailed yet smooth (not bright) in presentation and not what I would descibe as warm. I will likely remain curious about the 88E, because the 66E sounds great, but might not fare that well on the used market. I switched back to JJ Tesla tubes which I think I like better than Tung-Sol after all. Curiosity may get the best of me eventually on the 88E. If you decide to buy one, please post a review.
I also looked hard at the Doge player, which is quite a bit more expensive, but it has no balanced outputs. I've read some pretty good things about it on other sites. At these prices, I've also been tempted to try the tube amps at Pacific Valve, but none of them are balanced designs. I want to stay balanced end to end.
