Everything OS in the $1500-$2500 range sounds almost the same to me. That's not a bad thing. Naim, Quad, Arcam, Jungson, Sugden, Audio Analogue, Rega are among the first i would look at. Arcam's are really neutral. Naim, Quad and AA "swing" or "sing" a bit more.

I would highly recommend the Marantz S-11, but i am not sure what it costs in the US. This is both CD and SACD.

Audio Note DACs are different because it has both non-oversampling + tube output stage. It is pretty neutral actually. But relatively expensive. You have to get a transport, although they are meant to becoming out with 2 or 3 one-box CDP solutions (but they won't be cheap, either).

I didn't mean coloured in a bad sense, but it adds the tube flavour to the signal. Compare it with a Bryston to see what i mean.
