Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Re: Can anyone confirm if the Levinson 390s will accept 96kHz? I`ve read conflicting reports. Thanks in advance (nt)

It will ACCEPT it but will truncate the data down to 16bits anyway.

If you plan to use it primarily as a cdp it is a very fine machine that is very tolerant of bad disks and can make some of your worst disks sound good. And your good disks will sound wonderful.

But, as an outboard DAC, it can only be said "it was always kind to its mother...". It appears that ML deliberately crippled the 390S so that, as either transport or dac, it would not be a true competitor to their more expensive transports and dacs.

For more information see Stereophile test reports. I was truly annoyed when I read the report, after, of course, I had already bought the machine.

Still, like I said, as a cdp it is a fine machine. For use with a computer based music library I found the Benchmark dac to be a much better purchase. (FAR more jitter resistant and cable tolerant and can do true 24 bit files without truncating them to 16 bit.)At resale, the 390S did return most of the money I spent so I am not too upset.
