Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

why is it so difficult to make a universalish transport?

Hi all,

I am trying to figure out why it seems to be so universally (pardon the pun) agreed upon that to play cd or sacd or dvd that one simply must have a specific cd/sacd/dvd transport. I can sort of see it on the dvd side with needing to put video elements into the same box. But for playing a cd or a sacd, i mean, what is the technical issue that makes it so different? A laser reading bits with one frequency or another depending on source then transports them to a d2a. Uh, so why is this difficult or sonically less likely to be as good as a dedicated player? Lets assume for arguments sake we are not comparing 200 dollar mass market players here but full on 'high end' ones like say Classe or Meitner or Krell or whoever your flavor is for a universal cd/sacd if not cd/sacd/dvd combo.
