Meridian: G08 @ $4400 v. 588 @ $2200

I'm in the market for a new CD player and I've been reading the posts on this board and elsewhere as to the performance of Meridian's G08 and 588.
As my nearest Meridian dealer is quite far away, I wonder what you folks might think of the prospect of purchasing the G08 at $4400 or a (I've been told by a dealer) lightly used 588 at $2200.
In your opinion, is the G08 worth the extra cash? Is the 588 at $2200 a good deal?
By the way, I've heard (from the same dealer) that the list price of the G08 has recetly been raised to $4400. (Actually, I was told that Meridian raised its list prices by 10% across the board, due the the ever-sagging value of the Dollar.)
