Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

DAC

I asked this before but didn't get much of a response, hopefully it is not a stupid question. I have narrowed it down to a Marantz 5400 or a Cambridge since I can get a 30 day return period with Audioadvisor (I live in a small town with no real audio stores). But here is my question since I already own a Pioneer 525 which I can use as a transport. I can get a Scott Nixon or a Audio Note DAC in the same price range. In the $500 range do you think a person is better off getting a stand-alone CD player or a DAC? I can see arguments for both but it would seem to me that the DAC would be the better route so I can upgrade the transport later. But that aside, which will provide the best sound? Just curious what would be the biggest bang for my buck in this range.
