I found that doing each braided strand 1/2 length at a time worked best. For instance, by single strands were approx. 12 feet in length unbraided. So, I would anchor (usually by wrapping around a doornob several times) each of the three strands that I was braiding at their mid-point, therefore, I was never braiding anything longer than 6 feet.Also, when I begain braiding the "braided" strands, making the final ropes (if you will accept that term), I found that if I stood on something elevated (i.e. front porch) and allowed the un-braided portions to dangle, it went much faster. Couldn't figure out how to minimize the pain involved though other than using tape or band-aids on each finger tip.
