Bill,

Makes me want to try some of the DIY power cables now...

I'm not one to sugarcoat what I hear and I still don't really *love* the sound of my system. However I think I'm now beyond the "tolerate" point. The addition of the CAT5 wires and silver interconnects has taken away most of the bad sonic signatures that were bugging the crap out of me, mostly the glare and frequency imbalance.

However I do notice that when I first hooked up the CAT5 wires I could hear nuances in recordings that I couldn't before, notably the resonance of the guitar body instead of just the string. With the new silver cables it seems a bit harder to hear that than with the PBJs, although this may be a breaking in situation. You never really know what you're going to get until you run these babies under a load for a couple of hundred hours.

Anyway, I can now listen to most recordings and within a certain volume range I can even sing along and enjoy my system now. This is a pretty big upgrade for me in those terms.

Speaking of volume, I do have a general question that perhaps someone can answer: My system seems to only really come alive at a certain volume level. There is also an upper limit to this prime area that is not too far away from the lower limit. Fortunatley both are within my comfortable listening range. Apart from the Fletcher-Munson (sp?) hearing nonlinearity, what might create this sort of effect? I'm at a bit of a loss to explain with anything other than just conjecture.

Shawn Harvey
