If there is prior-art that is documented, then they are taking a big risk. However, it is hard to believe that they would go to this trouble and expense if documentation for braiding wire this way already existed.

Generally "prior art" tends to extend only to patent documents as it would be impossible to research every avenue for which the idea may have been "published." Someone mentioning it on an old FidoNet message board back in 1980 would technically constitute "prior art."

Just because you can braid laces or plastics this way does not make it obvious for wires, particularly to someone versed in the art. That's what matters.

Well, let me put it this way. When I first saw the original Kimber three wire braided cables, the first thing that crossed my mind was "Why three and not four?"

Since three wire braided audio cables have existed commercially for a couple of decades, how could braids of more than three strands not be obvious?
