I just finished the top half of my bi-wire CAT 5 Speaker Cables (9 pair) and connected them between my ST-70 and Quatre 4000 monitors (this system has separate bass enclosures). I let the preamp (PAS-3X) and amp warm up for a while and then popped in a CD of Miles Davis's Kind of Blue as my initial test. I decided to start with Flamenco Sketches, and literally as soon as the first note came out, I realized something was radically different. Suddenly, the speakers just disappeared, and I was catapulted into a three-dimensional musical space. I have never heard such a combination of syrupy smoothness and detail from my system. Instrumental timbres are right on. Pianos have wood in them. I got that little chill that means music is happening. I guess what's the most impressive is how I no longer perceive the speakers as two separate sound sources. It's all part of one integrated image. Gone is a whitish haze and grain that has been bothering me in the treble.The ST-70 seems very happy driving this load.
The wire being replaced, by the way, was standard PVC coated 14 ga. stranded OFC speaker wire.
Now, I've got to get to work on the bass cables.
