Yes, It works well

I've made two sets using the method you describe and it works well. There's something about not having that solder joint at the bottom of the shield that is comforting. Downside, the space on the shield between the outer jacket and the point where the center wire enters the braided shield is tricky to get covered with heatshrink so that it is protected from oxidation.

The other thing I did was to make the center wire about half-inch longer than the braided one. Then, I stripped the center wire back about an inch and looped the piece of the center wire that protruded out of the end of the braid back over the outside of the braid and then crimped the spade over that.
