In addition to what Jack stated, which I agree with, there are more issues on talk forums related to hidden agendas and secret identities. Anyone can register, adopt a moniker and have at it. AA is much better at weeding out some of these trolling posts, but no site is perfect.
Not long ago I saw a post that was purpoted to be from a well known reviewer, extolling the virtues of a specific line of cable. It turned out that the post was a fraud, with obvious intentions. I think this kind of "selling" is a lot more common than people know, especially at other sites.
Much like reviews, but IMO less so, posted comments on a product serve to inform of the products existence, price range, functional characteristics etc. Beyond that, the only arbiter of truth should be the individual and their system.
By far the greatest service provider in regard to referral, should be a trusted dealer whom a hobbyist has a close relationship with, or friends, or both. That way there exists context, familiarity, freidship and personal contact. There is absolutely no better way I know of to get the most for your money.
Having always been an ardent hobbyist, reviewer and now manufacturer, I have had the good fortune of varying perspectives and great access. I still give the most credit for my enjoyment of this hobby to my relationships with friends and great dealers. I think the internet and its two-dimensional forms of communication has taken that away for some people. too much time posting, not enough time listening and relating. JMHO
Happy listening,
Grant
