Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

Re: Who trusts "qualified" reviewers?

Audiophile "A" has hearing loss, a lo or mid-fi system, terrible hearing ability, low exposure to good sound, poor set up, poor room treatment, doesn't play an instument, never listens to live music, has sonic traits that he prefers which are hideous to many. Is this guy qualified?

Different cables work with different systems. How many Krell owners swear by MIT? They should, it is a good integration, they work well together. It is a good match. Yes, cable matching to the components, a marvelous concept. Will the MIT work well with my system, (Tube Research 200's, Tube Research Line, Altis, Elgar, JM Lab Utopia)? No way. I have a friend that lives nearby with a system very similar to mine that prefers Cardas. I've tried his Cardas in my system, and well, it went home fast. (This is not to say that I haven't used Cardas in the past with great results) It just doesn't jive in my current system with my tastes and sonic preferences. When my friend mentions that he hears something, I have some understanding of what he is trying to convey. We have history. Do I have history with the audio magazine reveiwers? No,however, I think that we have had enough exposure to them throughout time to where we can establish which reveiwer shares our preferences, or has hearing ability that we feel suitable.

Back to the on-line reveiwers; what do we know about their ability to hear/preferences/convey what they have heard? And, what they convey will suit those only with approximate comparable systems. Will Valhalla or others mentioned here match better within my system? No. I've tried them. Did I rush to a audio bulletin board to report my findings? Hell no. There aren't many guys out there that own Tube Research Labs. They have a 6 month waiting list at any given time. I've heard that since Andy Singer of Sound By Singer took on the line, so it may be longer yet. (Word is, Andys' $300K Ongaku-On amps sit in the corner, and the Tube Research 200's are hooked up to stay). So, if I report my findings, how many people out there can really use my findings as valid?

And back to your question, Roysen. I believe that a qualified reveiwer is checked out by the Editor in charge, and is found to have; good hearing, good hearing/listening ability, some time into the hobby, has owned several different systems, the ability to convey audible findings, proper set up knowledge, proper room treatment, etc. I think that if you asked most of the guys that made the grade, it wasn't a simple process. If all it takes is the ability to write, the magazines would fail.

Ive made a $10K plus cable investment recently, comparing several of the best, made my choice and I'm very happy. I'm not ready to invest another $10K because someone on a audio bulletin board that I know little about and has a system nothing like mine reports his findings. Are you?
