How do you evaluate wires & connectors?

First off let me say I'm glad this is a debate free zone. Some folks can get mighty far up there on there high-horse when someone mentions they tried a different cable and heard a difference let alone an improvement.

Now then what are some of the various methods used by members here to evaluate various cables and connectors you try? Personally, I have a few well recorded CDs and a couple of albums I know very well. If I hear something in the mix that I hadn't heard before, or don't hear something that should be there or something just sounds different, I know there's been a change. Further investigation follows.
