Equipment is a term, not unlike component is a term, while classification can be considered a marketing term. Other than that, capacitors, resistors, and other electronic components are not standalone devices that have strictly independent functions like that of what a lonely cable must provide, in and of itself, with hopeful synergy involved in its sole function as an interface device. Cables tend to fly solo in what they provide, with high performance I/O jacks as their helpers, if lucky.
