Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

RE: Cable advice for new system - Wonderfully Entertaining...

I love threads on audio interconnects. They are so entertaining. "The narcissism of small differences..." People gauging out each other's eyes, etc. Almost as much fun as a gang of slightly inebriated ladies squabbling over a male stripper...

Everyone knows the "Audio interconnects should cost around 10% of the total system cost" rule of thumb. It makes perfect sense. You spend around 10% of the cost of your home on painting the exterior, or 10% of the cost of your latest model Bimmer on in-flight entertainment, so why skimp on hi-fi?

I used various speaker cables over the years and they did sound different. The DNM cables were the best I used for a Cyrus II + PSR / Kef Q60 combo. They didn't sound quite as good with a different amp.

From my personal experience, the same cable will sound quite different depending on how you connect it to the speaker. Connecting it to the LF terminals seems to boost bass notes and suppress treble notes, vice versa for an LF connection. Connecting the cable diagonally to the LF and HF terminals has a different sonic effect again. Solid core cable sounds brighter than the same gauge stranded cable.

I just ordered some Van Damme HIFI Series Studio Grade Speaker Cable on spec. I couldn't audition it but it got good reviews on various websites. It's inexpensive so if it doesn't sound as good as my existing cable, no sweat.

The rule is there is no rule. I go with Tidycat1...
