Aside from what Duster said, you are adding connections, cables and maybe other active devices in the path. Based on your post, I am guessing that you have not yet tried different fibers and may be using a cheap plastic one.
Your system is not posted, so I'm not sure what resolution or DAC you have, but consider trying a Lifatec fiber for even better sound. I was pretty shocked at how much different 2 different glass fibers can sound even though I know that for coax digital cables, each one can affect the sound.
I also disable audio output over HDMI just to reduce any stray signals/fields, but I am not claiming to hear a difference from that.
