Belden 8422 is a 2-conductor cable with a braided shield? Maybe the braided shield is being used as a common ground, while the two central conductors are implemented as two positives for a dual-mono DC wiring scheme? Perhaps the third conductor of the mil-spec wire bundle would replace the braided shield being connected at both ends at this time, and the mil-spec shield would be connected at the power supply end only.
I would expect the 16/3 SPC/PTFE Teflon cable design of the mil-spec cable to sound far better than 22 AWG PVC Belden 8422, but I would need actual specs/information about the PSU wiring scheme before I made any decision.
Let me know if you need further help.
