An IC needs to transmit very little power. Speaker cables, on the other hand, need to move lots of current with little resistance, so a larger gauge will typically work better. Many speaker cables are constructed from multiple strands of fine wire, thereby accomplishing both tricks, but that can introduce other detrimental factors. Everything is a compromise.
