A review of Rullit Atelier Pure Rullity, $1,200 US interconnect cables.

I am generally recognized as a designer or evaluator and reviewer of very high quality full range fixed and field coil motor drivers and Open Baffle speaker systems.
That is how I became acquainted with these Rullit interconnect cables to begin with. Mr., Oleg Rullit, out of Nuremberg Germany, is allowing me to evaluate his full range field coil Aero 8 drivers as part of my continuing Open Baffle speaker system study.

Mr. Rullit and I have only communicated through email and neither of us is great with the other’s language. Oleg Rullit has had very little time or patience for questions. Subsequently my description of design, topology and make up of these interconnect cables will be sparse.

I have many years of experience with high end interconnect and speaker cables, stemming from my involvement with one of the Worlds’ very first audiophile cable companies back in the mid-1970’s. I have continued to practice the art of audiophile cable design and construction for more than thirty years. So, I can build a pretty good cable myself and am not restricted by any price points.

But, I have also collected and evaluated many, many commercially available high-end audio cables over the years. There are some very talented cable designers whose cables I love the sound of.

A one-meter pair of the Rullit interconnects under review here retails for $1,200. Certainly not inexpensive, but a long way from the price of the audiophile markets’ top tier interconnect cables, or the cables that I have usually retained and lived with.

These cables are quite stiff. It is obvious that what ever wire and geometry used is encased in some type of semi-flexible approximately one quarter inch tubing and finished with an attractive fiber mesh. This mesh encompasses and covers the entire barrel of the connectors used. Only a small portion of the connector’s ends are visible.

These cables are not designed to easily make tight turns and bends, but they are flexible enough to get the job done and are rugged as hell. I also find them quite attractive.

I have a one meter unbalanced RCA pair and a one-meter XLR balanced pair on hand.

The balanced pair is connected between my Ayre QB-9 and TX 102 transformer based Bent Audio passive preamplifier (Ok, remote control volume attenuator).

The RCA pair is connected between my Bent Audio passive attenuator and my Pass Labs First Watt SIT 2, 10-watt stereo amplifier.

The remainder of my current reference system consists of Source: Apple MacMini, Snow Leopard, latest Pure Music and or latest Audirvana.

Speakers: Open Baffles 24” wide by 54” tall. Altec 416, 16 ohm 15” woofers 1st order crossed at 135 hertz. Lowther PM2MKII 15 ohm 8” full range 2nd order low passed at 7,000 hertz. Raal Dipole Ribbon tweeters 4 ohm 2nd order high passed at 8,400 hertz. All crossover components are Duelund Cast Copper paper in oil types. Important. All drivers are naturally with in 2db efficiencies. No resistors in the system.

Subwoofers: A pair of, Les Hudson, 10” horn loaded powered subwoofers low passed at 50 hertz.

Audio Rack: 4 Tier Mana Amp Stand.

Speaker cables: Three 4-meter pairs of Audience Au24e.

USB Cable: My own design.

Power cables: All Audience AU24 Power Chords (6).

Power Conditioners: Two Audience Adept Response aR2pTO conditioners.

Dedicated Listening Room: 13 feet wide by 20 feet long by 9 feet high.

Positioning: The Open Baffles are positioned seven feet out from the short front wall and toed in toward the listening chair. The drivers are centered seven feet apart and the listening seat is centered eight to nine feet back. It is generally not a great idea to point the bigger Lowther drivers directly at the listener, however, this setup 2nd order filters these Lowther’s at around 7K.

Why post about these somewhat obscure German interconnect cables? Because they are one of only a hand full of “components” that I WILL NOT live without in my system. There have been many very good to fabulous audio products that have passed through my life that I have loved. However, almost all of these could be matched or mirrored by other excellent competitors within their audio categories.

This is nothing unusual, is it? Don’t we all have a short list of Audio products that stand out from all the rest in our audio hobby histories? My list includes my beloved Chartwell LS3/5a’s, Martin Logan CLS’s, Lowther PM2MKII Ticonal, Leak TL-25+ amplifiers, Van Den Hul MC-Silver interconnect cables, Naim NAP 250 amplifier, Audience Au24 Power Chords, Audience Adept Response aR2pTO’s, Rullit interconnect cables.

It is a very short (considering thirty five years in this hobby) and very eclectic list. But these are products that often led to a paradigm shift in my Audio Hobby and have stood the test of time for one reason or another. There have been many more impressive products/components, such as numerous very large multi-compression driver horn based speaker systems. But it has most often been the more unique and more modest components that set the sonic bar the highest. And most of these products were from small hobbyist/designer driven companies. Such is the case with the interconnect cables under review here.

These Rullit interconnect cables are only the second pair of signal cables to make my list. Ok, here comes the really hard part. How do I adequately convey to you what sets these interconnects apart for me sonically. Whenever I first evaluate any audio component I am working hard to discern any and every potential sonic difference created within my reference setup. Then I try and qualify and quantify these differences or changes in sound. Are they changes of omission or addition? Are these changes positive or negative within my reference system in general? Then, how does this specific component compare/compete with other similar class and type of products on hand?

As stated above, this is usually tedious work. It most often requires many, many direct comparative listening sessions to verify usually small, yet often sonically important differences. Then these verified positive sonic differences must be time verified. Are the positive benefits/differences consistently reproducible over time? For me, at least six-months. This time variable addition usually helps weed out the potential false positive sonic results for me. There are lots of potential phsychological and physical variables that only time can weed out. I don’t want my time of the month to affect my review, hence six months. (joke).

Evaluating my own designs or someone else’s commercially available products usually involves lots of hard work to uncover small sonic prizes at the end (new sonic benefits).
It’s kind of like mining for Gold. You will likely need to meticulously sift through many tons of pay dirt to uncover very few precious ounces of Gold. Top High End Audio components have kind of reached a steady state point where uncovering small sonic improvements requires sifting through lots of pay dirt, so to speak.

This was not the case with the Rullit Interconnects . They immediately presented with the same type of Spooky holographic presence that my, rare as hens’ teeth, Lowther Ticonal PM2MKII full range drivers produce. It would normally require lots of time and effort to uncover just a few minimal verifiable sonic merits that differentiate these Rullit interconnect cables from other available and recently evaluated cables. But, these damned cables made/make such a sonic statement that I ignored the evaluation and simply enjoyed the music. At least for a bit, then back to work.

Ok, my natural sense of skepticism kicked in after several hours of listening. I checked my system to assure that I had not inadvertently changed something else along with the addition of the Rullit interconnects. Maybe the wiring polarity on one of my many speaker/crossover connections had been previously out of phase? And maybe I fixed it when re-fitting these Rullit interconnects into the system?

Not the case. So, I then proceeded to second and third guess my initial dramatic findings with these interconnect cables. I performed quick and longer-term direct comparisons (not blind A/B however) with my available top four reference interconnect cable pairs.

This included my very costly Van Den Hul MC-Silver interconnects. My other reference interconnects offer outstanding midrange clarity, extreme inner detailing, silky yet extended highs, great microdynamic shadings, bold dynamic contrasting, etc…
What did you expect? That is why they were my reference cables.

But, each of my previous reference interconnects allowed me to clearly evaluate, qualify and grade each of the above listed sonic merits and more.

The Rullit interconnects were so dramatically and overtly superior that it is quite difficult for me to put into words. At least with phrasing that is not too verbose, even for me,

I cannot even state that what the Rullits' do better for me equates to obviously improved midrange clarity, bass, midbass, highs, inner detailing, micro and macro dynamics, dimensionality, smoothness, dynamic contrasting, etc, etc, etc…. They certainly do all of these things magically. These Rullit’s offer a very rare and difficult to describe quality that simply makes my system COME TO LIFE when they are installed. It is an obvious and very overt sonic upgrade that reminds me of the immediacy, openness and spooky dimensional realism presented by an exceptionally well-designed Open Baffle speaker system. It sounds as if there are thousands of tiny doors opening up within the music field allowing a far larger space and much more exceptionally delineated musical detail to come through. Kind of like walking through the open door of Doctor Who’s Tardis.

I always felt that my very expensive very thin reference silver/gold interconnects took me as far along the cable path as was sonically possible. Not to mention, my previous reference interconnect cables are several times more costly than these Rullit cables.

My previous references were always exceptionally open sounding and airy while retaining a nice smoothness and utter lack of grain. They offered a sense of life and midrange presence that left all other competitors in their dust, including my favorite MC-Silvers. A very nice and often utter lifelike three dimensionality seemed to extend beyond the end of my listening space out into the yard past the front wall.

The above are traits attributed to my previous reference (they are still here) interconnects and were often noticed during listening sessions.

It is more specifically in the presence region where the Rullit interconnects dramatically separate themselves from my previous Silver/Gold references and every other interconnect cable that I have experienced. That area where “The Music Lives”. Some call it the Midrange, but I think that the “Presence Region” is a term that may better help me describe what these cables do differently. To me the “Presence Region” encompasses not only the all important midrange frequencies, but allows me to talk about the other important features within this region that helps me suspend musical disbelief. And that is really what the Rullit’s do better than any other interconnect cable that I have experienced. They suspend musical disbelief by solidifying a palpable sense of dimensional realism and proper tone and tone density to every voice and instrument throughout the all-important “Presence Region” of every musical performance evaluated.

In closing, I in no way represent Mr. Oleg Rullit or his interests. I debated long and hard whether to even post this review do to the limited input from Mr. Rullit. I am only doing so because others should have the exposure to these remarkable sounding cables. I cannot and will not be able to respond to any specific questions about Oleg Rullit or his products. Below is an email attached quote from Mr. Oleg Rullit. Lastly, if you can get your hands on these “Pure Rullity” interconnects, buy them now. They are a monster steal.

"Lance, this model called Pure Rullity, costs 1200 US$/one set and can be offered direct from my laboratory. See a little bit of the philosophy about its function:
"They are playing with high spiritual and physical exactness. Our philosophy is that the equipment should behave like a glass you drink exquisite Bordeaux from: It helps the wine to develop its whole aroma, but nevertheless it's something neutral. You could also think of fine table ware made of porcelain - it makes you enjoy your meal, but hasn't got any influence on its taste. So it is our belief that absolutely no seasoning should be added to original music material, but it should be awakened to life together with its epoch and the atmosphere of the hall where it was performed".
