I would ascribe what you say you heard to each as you described them.
However the like or dislike was more to do with the kind of music at the time. So perhaps you enjoy the HT with music you like the fullness in, and the Kimber is not just right.
Where later you were listening to music in which clarity was important, and then you liked the Kimber better for that music.
This may or may not be true, but it seems to cover the facts and explain the differences.
You might find a compromise in trying one set of each in the chain.
Though it irks your theory and purity bent, it probably would solve your issues between likeing one for one way., and the other another way.
I would stick the Kimber from pre to amp, and the HT from CD to pre.
