I don't have experience of the current formulation, only the previous DeoxIt D5 Power Booster. The oily residue is a protectant, lubricant, and conductivity enhancer, so DeoxIt can be considered a contact treatment as well as a contact cleaner. Whether this is an undesirable thing vs. a product that only cleans is up to the end user. I don't find the DeoxIt residue to be a problem and use the product without concern. YMMV
