I've been using the Acoustic Zen Silver Resolution II XLR ICs from my DAC to preamp for quite some time. Been very happy with everything about them. However, I've moved to a new DAC, and with this DAC the one area where the AZ doesn't work as well as it did is in the projection of upper end air and space - most easily heard in live small club type recordings.
In Bill Evans "Live At The Village Vanguard", for instance, that sense of almost feeling the air circulation in the room - which is heard using the AZ and my older DAC - is a bit subdued with the same cables on the newer. The high end extension is just as good (better, actually), but that extra bit of "light" is not quite the same. In all other respects I like what the AZ does. So is there a XLR cable (in about the same price range) that might retain the other characteristics of the AZ but work better at recovering that open air quality with this different DAC?
The differences are small enough that I'm assuming (hoping) it's just a matter of picking the right IC.
