If you are spinning, I found it to be a bit of a toss up. In my system the next most effective spot is the amps but that will vary system to system. If you have an out board phonostage then I would try an aftermarket cord in both positions and go with whats sounds better. If you are using 'stock' cords on any equipment then try to make sure the blades are nickel free, that will help.
