Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

I was thinking of trying to build some unbalanced interconnects with wire such as this. How would I use the shield most effectively? Combine the shield with the ground connector at one end or maybe let both ends be free? Maybe it is not a good wire for this application but it looks like it has potential.
