My conversion happened when I upgraded to Stereophile recommended speakers and was disappointed when they sounded like utter crap. Changed cables and, bam, they sounded good. But as others have said it's all about matching. Those cables that made my new speakers sound bad actually made my old speakers sound good.

For reasonably priced interconnects I recommend WireWorld.
