Kimber 4PR is slightly peaky, just as you say. 4VS is a modest price increase over 4PR, but has better frequency extension and resolution, and doesn't have the 4PR's peakiness. However, the old 4TC sounds better yet, and is quite a bit faster. IMO, the 4TC is worth the cost, and I think you can find used 4TC in your price range. I haven't heard the new 4TC, but it's supposed to sound better than the old.___
