Single ended Pre-amp IC to balanced amp inputs (Long)

I have no auditory experience with balanced connections and their relative benefits. Would someone inform me as to the relative merits of running long IC's, say 20 feet, from the single ended outputs (thru an adapter/converter) to the balanced inputs of a power amp. Is there any benefit, in general, I know its component & combination specific but, I'm looking for a generalization here. Or would it be better, just as good or worse to run (same hypothetical length) single ended IC's to the single ended inputs of the same power amp?
