I find the sound to be rather bright or maybe too revealing of my source.

My guess is that you are right and that your onkyo is the reason you are hearing something bright...and that the speakers need more time.

Wait until they have a 100 hours or so on them and see if you are still getting the brightness. ALso think about treating the room or speaker placement too.

SOmetimes vibration can make things bright. I had a buddy with an onkyo stereo receiver running his speakers and that set up was bright. I put some good cables and it just made things worse. I tracked the brightness down to the wood rack and the onkyo. The case was flimsy on the Onkyo and vibrated (the rack contributed a bit too). I found a 20lb weight and put it on top of the Onkyo and it helped. Didn't cure it but helped.

Using cables to solve system issues like this is not the best approach as many other things will have a bigger impact.

If you must solve this with cables, pick some crappy ones that aren't as revealing of the source. Monster comes to mind.
