Hey Tom - You are correct, I've mixed descriptions about my DIY speaker cables with the wire itself. The wire is AC solid core 4N silver coated with polysterimide, and multiple strands are twisted together to form each composite run for the positive and negative side of the cable. Each side enclosed in wide cotton tubing. Probably would have been better to provide damping between the individual wires, but that's another project. I used the lighter on the very ends of the individual wires, which allows the charred polysterimide on the ends (about .75 inch) to come off much more easily with the sandpaper. Much easier than scraping with an exacto blade or similar. Perhaps not the best thing to do based on your comment about possible damage from heat transfer.
