How can a wire be multi-strand AND solid core? It's one or the other.

If you're burning very thin insulation off a wire, how do you know where the heat stops traveling through the wire and doesn't affect the insulation? I think using a lighter to remove insulation would be very risky, especially on fine gauge wire. I'm amazed and sometimes dismayed at how much heat transfers through a wire just from applying a soldering iron to one end for a few seconds.
