Chris gives good advice.
The issue is shielded vs. non-shielded in flavors and whether you have a ground wire or not in your system (3 wire vs. 2 wire). Generally the advice here has been to go unshielded for analog amps and use shielded for digital components. That's worked for me.
The star quad wire from Chris Ven Haus is often used where high draw is needed for current. Otherwise, the usual 2 wire twisted as the core of the cable works very well, maybe even better, by reputation here.
If you have a 3 wire system that requires an earth ground, then you have to run the counterspiraled ground wire. If you have a 2 wire cord you don't want to use the extra ground wire at all.
As to terminations and materials, you can do his flavors/designs with anything you can find in your local hardware store and you'll likely get significant improvement over many stock power cords out there. And this is a good way to test out your DIY skills and this particular tweak on the cheap. But the better materials and terminations make a massive difference beyond that as well. Chris' own raw wire is superior to what I can buy in my hardware store and after break in you'll appreciate the difference. And oddly, it costs very little more per foot anyway.
The terminations make a huge difference. P&S is a good start, marinco or Wattgate are successive improvements, Furutech is a major improvement, and Oyaide puts it over the top. I never liked the Hubbell stuff at all, but that's just my opinion.
