In my humble experience with power cords, I found that the big, thick and macho power cords tend to over emphasize the sound and ultimately provide a 'false' presentation. At the same time, the generic cord that comes with the gear is not at at all sufficient. It will sound 'tame' as you describe but it won't filter out RFI etc..and will still pass through some AC line distortions. What you need to find is a well designed power cord that will sound 'tame' and 'clean'..
One example is the Acoustic Zen El Nino Power Cord. It cleans out the AC power, will not give you an over-empahsized sonic presentation, will not change the tonal balance of your gear and will have the 'tame' character you're describing. It also works very well with all types of gear.
I'm sure there are other similar examples, but the AZ I tried and I heartily endorse and strongly recommend to those seeking a 'neutral', well balanced and sonically non-intruding power cord.
Hope this helps
