Don't forget conductor. IME they all do, sorry. You can use the awg, conductor and to a lesser extent dielectric, and geometry to either synergize with or exacerbate the sonic signature of the connector being used. The less you need to off set for a sonic flaw, like lets say upper midrange/lower treble glare, or a overly generous bass etc. the better off you are and the easier it will be to make something that approaches neutrality.
