I don't think I'm speaking the same language as everyone else here. I know how frustrating it is to have these new kids running all over the place thinking that they can buy the best for a couple of bucks. I know cameras, and it just gets tiring explaining the first two points repeatedly to unwilling ears even though they asked for advice. But maybe I should explain where I am coming from:
Currently, I'm using a pair of old JBL bookshelf models powered by a Sansui amplifier made after the company's prime. The system was inherited, although I have put much more effort into refining the sound than the previous owner did. Of course I want the best, but I need to build from the ground up. Just like with cameras: you can't walk into a store expecting every feature in a small package for an unbelievable price. Some people get mad when they can't get the camera they want for the budget they have, but I am trying not to do the same. My JBL pair is probably around $150, so most wiring advice would be unreasonable in this case just due to price. I am working towards a pair of Adam-Audio A7 studio monitors, self powered units that go for about $1,000 a pair - please don't think that I am not willing to upgrade, I just need to work on the links of the stereo in the correct order. I decided to simplify my setup by running all future audio from my computer, for which I just ordered and installed an entry level studio-grade sound card.
I know I can't afford a package of RCA bullet plugs that start at $125, but I really want to step above using speaker wires from Home Depot with plugs and connectors from Radio Shack. I would actually enjoy a do-it-yourself project if I knew what my objective was, but that budget needs to be kept within reason as well. Question: will there be an audible difference between, say, Kimber Kable and Radio Shack on such cheap speakers? Or on more expensive speakers before amplification? Question: do expensive connectors sound better than Radio Shack as well?
I am willing to make cables out of extension cords or even cat5, but my budget is low. What would you recommend?
Also, how does Parts Express sound for cheap parts?
