The "kooky square socket" is most likely for a fiber optic cable as shown here. It is also refered to as a Tos-link cable.

Generally it is prefered to run the audio portion of the DVD signal straight into your HT receiver and not thru the TV and from what U have described, it sounds like it's your TV that is giving U the problems.

Also, it appears that the Arcam FMJ-A32 does not employ a Tos-link digital input from a cursory glance at the back panel which can be viewed by clicking the link.
